Former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir is only 30 years of age. However reigning king Brock Lesnar is already pouring dirt onMir's MMA career after Shane Carwin handed him a first round TKO loss at UFC 111 on Saturday night.
“I kind of figured Shane was going to win, though I know anything can happen in this sport,” Lesnar told Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports . “I was kind of laying back and I didn’t want to count any chickens before they hatched. Shane’s a tough guy and I just know that Frank’s time is done.
“This is the new evolution of the heavyweight division. Brock Lesnar, Shane Carwin, Cain Velasquez, Junior dos Santos, we’re the guys in this division.”
Lesnar made his statements just moments after his bitter rival was put to sleep by the engineer-turned interim champ. With the win, Carwin bumped his pro record to a perfect 12-0 and has never had to extend himself past the opening stanza.
“This belt thing, well, hopefully he enjoys the moment,” Lesnar said while Carwin was posing for pictures just feet away. “He should enjoy the win over Frank, but he has to realize that I’m the heavyweight champion. Everybody knows that. Good for him winning that fake belt.
“I had to pull out against him last fall and I didn’t feel good about that. But I couldn’t fight a guy like that if I wasn’t in the best shape of my life. I had to do what I had to do.”
The champs were initially slated to meet at UFC 106 last November, then again at UFC 108 in January, but Lesnar was forced out both times after contracting a severe case of of diverticulitis .
UFC president Dana White confirmed with Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com that Lesnar and Carwin will unify the strap at UFC 116 on July 3rd in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Fireworks are sure to fly this Independence Day weekend; however if you ask Lesnar, Mir will be watching the heavyweight parade pass him by.
